What is TPU?
Health and parenting support for young māmā and pāpā in education.
Te Hononga works alongside the Taonga Teen Parent Unit, to support young parents continuing their education. Based in South Auckland, the unit is delivered in partnership with James Cook High School (Te Haikura ā Kiwa) and Taonga Education Centre Trust.
Our dedicated on-site nurse and whānau support worker provide health care, parenting guidance and practical support to help māmā and pāpā care for their pēpi while working toward their goals.
Together, we build strong foundations for the future by empowering young parents to thrive in both learning and life.
Services Offered
Rangatahi parents attend tailored classes while their tamariki are cared for at the on-site early childhood centre. Specialist teachers and support staff assist them in developing academic skills, building parenting confidence and strengthening resilience. The unit provides wrap around support, giving access to Te Hononga’s health, wellbeing and cultural services so young parents can thrive in both education and life.
Our Teen Parenting Units provide
- Registered nurse on-site for primary health checks, immunisations and management of common health concerns
- Hauora (wellbeing) education and health promotion tailored to teen parents and their pēpi
- Routine wellbeing assessments for both māmā and young children
- Support coordinating referrals and access to health and wellness services
- Parenting information and gentle guidance around child development and safety
- Advocacy within health and education systems to help rangatahi stay engaged and supported

Our Approach
Our kaupapa (approach) is whānau-centred, recognising that education, health, and parenting success go hand in hand. We work in partnership with families, schools, and community organisations to provide a caring environment where young parents can thrive.
